Vehicle Modification and Registration

You must turn a standard car into an "Adapted Vehicle" to drive legally and safely.

Key Points:

  1. Temporary Registration: You get a 45-day temporary number to drive the car from the showroom to a workshop for modifications.
  2. Certified Modifications: You must use a workshop approved by the ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India). They will install certified "hand controls" or other equipment. Use the map below to find ARAI approved workshop.
  3. RTO Inspection: After the car is modified, take it to the RTO. An inspector will check the car to make sure the modifications match your Driving Ability Certificate.
  4. RC Status: Check your Registration Certificate (RC) carefully. It must clearly state the vehicle category is an "Adapted Vehicle". This status is required for your road tax and GST benefits.
